How to Handle Your Little One’s Dental Emergency

We know that dental emergencies happen unexpectedly and can be particularly scary for both parents and children.

If your little one experiences a dental emergency, give us a call at (225) 924-2010 right away. This number will direct you to Dr. Day!

We’ll schedule a same-day appointment to see your child as soon as possible and provide the necessary treatment. Please be prepared to report what happened, when it happened, how it happened, so we can determine the right treatment approach.

In the meantime, here are a few tips for common dental emergencies:

  • Toothache: If your little one has a toothache, rinse their mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling. Administer over the counter pain medication like Tylenol or Motrin.
  • Missing tooth: If a permanent tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk and bring it to us as soon as possible. If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back in the socket. This can damage the permanent tooth developing beneath the gums.
  • Broken tooth: If a tooth is broken or chipped, rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce swelling. Try to save any broken pieces and bring them to us.
  • Bitten lip or tongue: Apply gentle pressure to the area with a clean cloth. If there is excessive bleeding or if the bleeding does not stop, go to the emergency room.
  • Object stuck in teeth: With a gentle hand, try to use dental floss or a toothbrush to remove the object. Do not use sharp or pointed instruments.
  • Abscessed tooth: An abscessed tooth is a serious infection that can cause severe pain and swelling. Contact us right away for an emergency appointment.

It’s our goal to see you and your child as soon as possible to treat his or her dental emergency and relieve any pain or discomfort. We want to avoid potential health complications and prevent further damage to your child’s smile!
