Pediatric Dental Sealants

When it comes to children’s dental health, prevention is key! Dental sealants are one of the easiest procedures for preventing tooth decay (cavities) and bacteria buildup on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Dr. Rebecca Day and our experienced team are here to guide you and your child toward the most efficient treatment route to meet your child’s needs!

What are sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that protects the biting surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities. Sealants are made of a resin material that resembles the natural color of the teeth.

Placing dental sealants is a quick and painless procedure! Dr. Day can place sealants for your child right after his or her routine exam and cleaning.

The resin material is applied on the back molars to coat the chewing surfaces of the teeth and fill the deep grooves that tend to be most susceptible to decay. Dental sealants block out bacteria, food and debris and prevent bacteria from building up after eating and drinking.

How long do dental sealants last?

Dental sealants can remain on teeth for up to 10 years! However, sealants become less protective over time and are most effective in the first two years.

Why are dental sealants beneficial?

Preventing cavities from developing is a lot easier and a lot more comfortable for children than treating cavities after they develop!

The more we focus on preventing tooth decay through treatments like dental sealants as well as regular exams and cleanings, the healthier your child’s teeth will be and the fewer dental procedures he or she will need.

What can I expect when my child gets dental sealants?

If Dr. Day recommends sealants for your child, we’ll start by explaining the process in detail! Once you and your child are comfortable with getting started, we’ll quickly clean the tooth or teeth. We then apply a gel substance on the chewing surfaces where the sealant will be placed. This gel substance helps the sealant to bond tightly to the tooth.

We will rinse and dry the tooth, then paint the sealant onto the tooth. We use a special light to harden the sealant and create a strong, protective barrier.

The entire procedure only takes about 2 to 3 minutes per tooth! Your child can then resume his or her day, eating and drinking normally with no downtime.
