Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We’re so excited to welcome you and your little one to Sunny Day Pediatric Dentistry!

On your first visit, our goals are to familiarize you and your child with Dr. Rebecca Day, our team and our office, establish a relationship with you, provide you with education about infant oral health, and ensure proper growth and development in your little one’s smile.

When to schedule your child’s first dental exam

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your child receives his or her first dental exam when the first tooth appears, or no later than his or her first birthday.

Your child’s first dental exam is essential for identifying and treating existing problems or preventing problems that are soon to appear. Your first visit also helps your child establish a positive relationship with dentist visits, so they feel comfortable visiting the dentist through adulthood.

Helping your child adopt positive oral hygiene habits will help them achieve a beautiful and healthy smile for the rest of their life!

What to Expect

  1. When you call us to request an appointment for your little one, we’ll send digital patient forms to your phone. You can complete these at your convenience, prior to your appointment date, so we can see you right away when you arrive.
  2. When you visit us, you’ll be greeted with smiles from Sunny faces. You can expect this at every visit! As you sit down in our waiting room, you’ll notice our fun, interactive “cave” for your little one to play in while you wait. We find that this is a great way to ease children’s anxiety and create a positive experience!
  3. Once your child’s name is called, we welcome you to the back with your child! Your little one is welcome to sit in your lap, sit in the dental chair, or stand up – however they feel the most comfortable. We adapt our approach to meet your child’s needs, and we NEVER force anything.
  4. When we’re ready to begin their first dental exam, we’ll start by telling and showing your child what we’re going to do. We explain everything to your little one, get on their level, and let them help and be involved in the process to make it fun.
  1. Once your little one is comfortable, we’ll slowly introduce teeth cleaning and flossing if he or she allows. We will take x-rays if necessary, perform a professional fluoride treatment, and Dr. Day will examine for cavities as well as any dental abnormalities and assess dental growth and development. Dr. Day will perform a full intraoral and extraoral exam.
  2. Using the information from your child’s exam, Dr. Day will have the full picture of what your little one’s needs are! From here, she’ll develop a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan made just for your little one. This may involve future treatments and/or further education. We also want you to know that we’re here for you in the event of a dental emergency!
  3. Finally, we end with a prize! At Sunny Day, our entire approach is centered around making your child happy, letting them determine the pace we work at, and leaving a positive impression that makes them want to visit us again in the future!
