PDAA Anesthesia (In-office Pediatric IV Sedation)

For children undergoing lengthy or complex dental procedures, children who are particularly anxious or little ones with special needs, we partner with the Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates to offer safe pediatric dental sedation!

What is IV sedation?

In-office IV sedation is a calming technique that involves administering sedative medication through an IV (intravenously) to put young patients to sleep, and prevent stress and discomfort before and during dental procedures.

The IV will be administered through a vein in the young patient’s arm or hand. We always administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help your child feel sleepy and calm before IV insertion. Thanks to our wonderful team, most of our patients do not even realize they are getting an IV.

Your child’s safety is our number one priority!

We partner with Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA), a third-party, compliant anesthesiology organization that sends a pediatric anesthesiologist, a PICU nurse and EMT to our office to safely administer IV sedation. Our pediatric anesthesiologist is Dr. John Sisney – you can meet him by watching the video below!

This way, we ensure that your child is always in the hands of highly-qualified, exceptional specialists. Working with PDAA enables us to provide safe IV sedation right here in the comfort of our office, without going to the hospital.

How long does IV sedation take to wear off?

The effects of IV sedation may be felt up to 12 hours after the procedure. We will discuss post-op instructions, including what you and your child can expect after the procedure and which precautions to take.

What are the benefits of pediatric dentist IV sedation?

Helps your little one develop a positive association with dentist visits
Dentist visits don’t have to be scary! Calming your child with IV sedation for a dental procedure can relieve dental anxiety and prevent your child from feeling pain or discomfort. This technique makes your child less likely to fear the dentist in the future!

Decreases anxiety
IV sedation will make your child feel sleepy, dreamy and warm! These sensations will ease any pain, anxiety or fear. With IV sedation for your child, you have the option to complete all necessary treatments at one time in the office.

Your little one is unconscious
IV sedation puts your little one into a deep sleep. Your child will receive only enough medication for deep sedation/light general anesthesia, in which your child will be unconscious but still breathing on their own with normal blood pressure and vital signs. While under, they won’t be able to feel pain or anxiety associated with the procedure.

What can I expect if my child undergoes in-office IV sedation?

When we schedule the dental procedure appointment for your child, Dr. Day will discuss what to expect before and after IV sedation! Our goal is to ensure that you have all of your questions answered before you and your child arrive for the procedure.

IV sedation works quickly, and your child will start to feel the calming effects within minutes after placing the IV.

For safety reasons, you will not be able to go to the back with your child. However, our Sunny Day team and the experienced PDAA team are friendly and warm, and do everything we can to make your child feel comfortable and at ease. Your child can watch a movie as they fall asleep!

If other dental procedures are necessary, we can complete all treatments at one time during your visit.
