Preventive Dental Care Info

We want to help your little one establish a healthy and strong foundation for a beautiful set of permanent teeth to grow! Preventive dental care and education can help your child develop positive oral hygiene habits that benefit them for a lifetime.

At your first visit to our pediatric dental office in Baton Rouge or Addis, LA, Dr. Rebecca Day will explain the importance of preventive care with a fun approach to engage your little one!

What is preventive dental care?

Preventive dentistry involves all of the treatments and techniques aimed to help your child maintain clean, healthy and strong teeth. These include in-office treatments as well as at-home care!

Preventive Dental Services

Preventive dental services include in-office treatments, like professional fluoride treatment and dental sealants, and at home care and precautionary measures, like mouthguards for sports, brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, eating a well-balanced nutrient-dense diet, and minimizing sugar through alternatives, like xylitol.

Professional Fluoride Treatment

We offer professional fluoride treatment at your child’s regular cleaning appointments! Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay (cavities.) Fluoride is safe approved for children ages 6 months to 16 years by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Our fun-flavored fluoride treatments can help strengthen your child’s teeth, while leaving a delicious taste behind.

Mouthguards

If your child plays sports or other contact activities, we highly recommend a mouthguard. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your child’s teeth from impact and can prevent dental emergencies and costly dental procedures down the road.

Balanced Diet

A healthy diet is essential for good dental health. A diet low in processed sugar, and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is ideal. By eating a balanced diet, your child will have the nutrients he or she needs to fight infection, prevent decay, and promote healthy teeth and gums.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a protective coating that we can apply to your child’s molars after their regular cleaning. The sealant creates a barrier that prevents food and bacteria from getting stuck in the crevices of the teeth. Sealants for kids are highly-effective for preventing tooth decay! They’re quick and painless, and can last for several years.

Brushing and Flossing

Beautiful smiles start with proper brushing and flossing habits at home! It’s important that your little one brushes his or her teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and flosses at least once a day to clean between their teeth. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent cavities and gum disease.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that serves as an alternative to processed sugar. You can find xylitol in sugar-free gum and candy products. When your child chews gum or eats candy containing xylitol, it can neutralize the acids in their mouth and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria!
