Pediatric Dental General Anesthesia (Outpatient)

For children with severe dental anxiety, children with special needs, or young children undergoing lengthy or complex dental procedures, general anesthesia is a sedation option!

If your child has an upcoming dental procedure and requires general anesthesia, Dr. Rebecca Day will explain the process in detail, answer all of your questions, and take extra time to ensure that you and your child are comfortable.

What is general anesthesia for children’s dental procedures?

With general anesthesia, your little one will be completely asleep, unconscious, and pain-free. General anesthesia is administered outpatient, in a hospital setting, through an IV.

Is general anesthesia safe for children?

We’re glad you asked! Yes, general anesthesia performed by qualified specialists in a compliant setting is safe for children.

What are the benefits of outpatient sedation for kids’ dental procedures?

Helps your little one develop a positive association with dentist visits
Dentist visits don’t have to be scary! Administering general anesthesia for a dental procedure will prevent your child from feeling any pain or discomfort. This technique makes your child less likely to fear the dentist in the future!

Allows your child to fully relax
In cases where conscious sedation techniques may not be effective for a young patient, the dental procedure is intense or lengthy, or the little one has special needs, guiding your child into an unconscious state before performing the procedure can be more practical than keeping them awake.

What can I expect if my child undergoes outpatient, general anesthesia?

When we schedule the dental procedure appointment for your child, Dr. Day will discuss what to expect before and after general anesthesia! We will provide you with pre-procedure instructions when we schedule the appointment.

In the meantime, here’s what you can expect when you show up:

  1. You and your little one arrive at the hospital
  2. During pre-op, the doctor may administer oral medications to help your child relax
  3. Your little one goes back to the operating room with the nurse and anesthesiologist. For safety purposes, parents cannot come to the back.
  4. However, the team prioritizes your child’s comfort and is excellent at talking to young ones gently to help keep them calm. They’ll get to watch movies on a tablet!
  5. They will allow your child to breath anesthesia sedation gas until he or she falls asleep.
  6. Once your child is asleep, they’ll start the IV!
  7. When your child is under anesthesia for dental work, they will not feel anything!

Once the procedure is complete, we will welcome you in to see your little one.
