Pediatric Dental Procedures and Treatments

 Dental exams and cleanings

At your little one’s regular check-ups and cleanings, our goal is to clean your child’s smile, as well as diagnose, treat or prevent any potential dental conditions. We’ll help you and your child develop the best techniques for at-home dental hygiene!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a dental check-up every six months in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems.

 Dental sealants

A dental sealant is a preventive treatment that provides a protective barrier for the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Sealants block food, debris, plaque and acid from reaching the areas of the teeth that are prone to decay.

If your child is at risk of developing cavities, we may suggest dental sealants.

 Dental restorations

Pediatric dental restorations include fillings, dental crowns, and baby root canals. A dental restoration may be necessary if a cavity forms or is left untreated and causes considerable damage to teeth.

If your little one requires a dental restoration, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan and explain the entire process in detail!

 Dental extractions

Dental extractions may be performed on baby teeth or adult teeth. In cases where teeth are damaged due to decay, injury or infection, extracting the tooth or teeth can help to restore dental health and prevent further damage or complications.

We offer calming treatments, including nitrous oxide inhalation, in-office conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia in a hospital setting, to help reduce your child’s dental anxiety and create a comfortable atmosphere!

 Interceptive Orthodontics

The alignment of your child’s teeth can affect their quality of life, in both bite function and self-esteem. In cases of dental misalignment, where teeth are crowded or crooked, or there isn’t sufficient room in the mouth for permanent teeth to emerge and grow in alignment, interceptive orthodontic treatment can help guide the proper eruption of teeth.

Not every child requires orthodontics. If Dr. Day determines that your child would benefit from orthodontics, she may refer you to an experienced local orthodontist!

 Laser Frenectomies

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the frena from the mouth. (The frena is the tissue that connects the tongue to the mouth, as well as the upper lip to the gums.)

In cases of tongue-tie or lip-tie, when the tongue or upper lip cannot move properly, this can contribute to a number of issues with growth and development.

We use an advanced laser approach for frenectomies, because it’s less invasive, quicker and gentler for your little one!

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a minimally invasive dental treatment that helps combat tooth decay in primary teeth. Applied as a liquid, SDF halts the progression of cavities by killing harmful bacteria and strengthening the tooth structure.

Sedation Options

Sedation Options

We offer four different types of sedation to help little ones relax before and during dental procedures.

  1. Nitrous oxide inhalation: Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is administered in-office and helps to relax your child before his or her dental procedure or before receiving an IV.
  2. In-office conscious sedation: For very young children, children with special needs, or children who have a little more dental anxiety than others, Dr. Day will administer the oral medication best suited for your child.
  3. In-office IV sedation: We partner with PDAA, a qualified anesthesiology organization that sends a pediatric anesthesiologist, PICU nurse and EMT to our office to safely administer IV sedation. With IV sedation, your child will be in a deep sleep.
  4. General anesthesia in the hospital setting: If your child does not work well under conscious sedation or IV sedation, using general anesthesia in a hospital setting may be the best route to ease anxiety and ensure a successful dental procedure.
