Pediatric Dental Exams and Cleanings

Developing positive oral hygiene habits at a young age will set your child up for a lifetime of beautiful and radiant smiles!

Dr. Rebecca Day and our experienced team are here to support you and your child with the highest quality of preventive pediatric dentistry in Baton Rouge and Addis.

What are pediatric dental exams and cleanings?

During your child’s routine dental check-up, our goal is to examine his or her smile to detect and diagnose any existing dental concerns, create a treatment plan if necessary, and clean areas of their teeth that cannot be reached with their toothbrush.

What age should a child go to the dentist for the first time? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children receive their first dental cleaning and exam when the first tooth appears, or no later than your little one’s first birthday.

After your child’s first visit, it’s recommended that he or she receives an exam and/or dental cleaning every six months.

Why are routine exams and cleanings important?

The earlier we’re able to detect problematic dental conditions, the sooner we can intervene with a treatment and prevent further damage or complications. We take x-rays to examine the areas that we cannot see with the naked eye.

Preventing problematic conditions
Through routine exams and cleanings, we can help prevent harmful conditions like tooth decay (cavities), gum disease, plaque and tartar buildup, and other abnormalities, by developing a plan to minimize risk factors and maximize the effectiveness of your child’s at-home dental hygiene routine.

What can I expect at my child’s dental exam?

X-rays and exam
We may take dental radiographs or x-rays to diagnose decay in between the teeth as well as any dental abnormality or pathology.

A gentle approach
We will never force anything! We go at your child’s pace, taking our time, getting on their level, and introducing things as your child becomes more comfortable.

We provide pediatric dental care for children up until they start having “adult needs” on adult teeth. Typically, around the ages of 12 – 16, we will start referring your child to the general dentist.
