Have you ever heard of “sleepy juice” at the dentist? This is what some people call the medication used for kids’ oral conscious sedation!
In-Office Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a type of sedation dentistry technique that uses oral medications to help ease children’s anxiety and make them feel sleepy, without putting them to sleep.
If your child would benefit from oral conscious sedation, Dr. Rebecca Day will explain the process in detail, answer all of your questions, and take the time to ensure that you and your child are comfortable.
What is pediatric oral sedation (in-office sedation)?
Oral conscious sedation is a type of pediatric sedation that makes your child feel relaxed and drowsy for a dental procedure, while remaining conscious.
Dr. Day will administer the medication best suited for your child’s overall health and dental treatment plan! Depending on the patient and treatment plan, we utilize one or a combination of the following medications – midazolam (versed), diazepam (valium), meperidine (demerol) and hydroxyzine (vistaril). The amount of medication will be determined by the patient’s weight.
Pediatric oral sedation may be recommended for young children, nervous children, and children with special needs.
How long does oral sedation take to wear off?
The effects of oral medication last longer than the effects of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Your little one may feel the calming effects up to 8 hours after the procedure. If your child receives conscious sedation, we recommend staying home from school and activities for that day.
What are the benefits of pediatric oral sedation dentistry?
Helps your little one develop a positive association with dentist visits
Dentist visits don’t have to be scary! Calming your child with conscious sedation for a dental procedure can relieve dental anxiety and prevent your child from feeling pain or discomfort. This technique makes your child less likely to fear the dentist in the future!
Decreases anxiety
Oral sedation will make your child feel sleepy, dreamy and warm! These sensations will ease any pain, anxiety or fear.
Your little one maintains consciousness
Conscious sedation does not put your child to sleep. Your little one will be conscious through the whole procedure, and they will maintain all of their natural reflexes!
What can I expect if my child undergoes in-office, oral sedation?
When we schedule the dental procedure appointment for your child, Dr. Day will discuss what to expect before and after conscious sedation! Our goal is to ensure that you have all of your questions answered before you and your child arrive for the procedure.
We will administer oral medication in our office, allow it to work for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, then head back to our private treatment room. Mom and Dad, you are welcome to join us in the back! We want you and your child to be as comfortable as possible. Once the medication takes effect, your child will drift in and out of sleep, while remaining conscious.
Please be prepared to be at the office for two hours for the entire sedation/procedure appointment.
