A pediatric tooth extraction involves the surgical removal of primary teeth (baby teeth). For tooth extractions, we typically recommend one of our sedation techniques to ease your child’s anxiety!
Pediatric Tooth Extractions
If your little one has deep cavities or dental abscess, Dr. Rebecca Day will perform a thorough exam to determine whether the tooth extraction procedure is the right treatment route.
What is a pediatric tooth extraction?
Primary teeth and permanent teeth may develop abscesses (painful pockets of pus) from trauma or injury, from existing decay (cavities), or from infection. In these cases, extraction may be necessary to prevent further damage to the surrounding teeth and jaw bones, pain, and infection.
What are the benefits of tooth extractions for children?
Prevent further problems
Treating infections and eliminating tooth decay are essential for maintaining healthy teeth. As the infection or decay spreads, the jaw bones and surrounding teeth are at risk too. Extracting problematic teeth can prevent further infection.
Relieve pain
Extracting a tooth can relieve pain caused by improper growth, injury or infection. If an abscess forms around the tooth root, this can cause significant pain and tenderness around the tooth and in the jaw bone. By extracting the tooth and treating the source of pain, we can help your child feel comfortable again!
Orthodontic Extractions
Sometimes orthodontists will recommend extraction of primary or permanent teeth to aid in orthodontic treatment. Dr. Day is experienced in performing tooth extractions to help prepare your little one for orthodontics.
What can I expect if my child needs a tooth extraction?
Our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Day, will examine your child’s smile and determine whether a tooth extraction is necessary. If so, we will explain the process in full detail and get on your child’s level to help them understand in gentle terms too!
Before the procedure, we can safely administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help ease your child’s fears. We also provide in-office conscious sedation, IV sedation and outpatient general anesthesia depending on your child’s needs!
We will use a local anesthetic to numb the mouth and ensure that your child will not feel pain. Once we extract the problematic tooth or teeth, the tooth extraction healing time is typically 1 to 2 days.
Again, we will explain every step to you when you visit us at our pediatric dentist office in Baton Rouge or Addis! We will always take the extra time to ensure that you feel informed and understand the entire process.
